Local Vibes

Cheltenham town scene

Cheltenham has a music pedigree like no other. Brian Jones, Gustav Holst are the biggies, while we have it on good Pirate authority that FKA Twigs was born somewhere nearby. Local band Grief Ritual is also leading the charge in rebuilding the town's former glories in punk and metal. And, aside from the horses, the must-do event on everyone's calendar is the Cheltenham Jazz Festival.

Here are a few suggestions for making the most of this side of the Cotswolds:

  • Visit the Wilson, the museum and art gallery and adjoining cafe, for a taste of history
  • Crate diggers will enjoy record stores The Independent Record Shop (specialists in 78's, punk and reggae), Vinyl Vault (prog rock and folk), and Badlands (classic rock).
  • Grab a brew at the DEYA taproom, when it's sunny you can sit outside the brewery and drink.

Know somewhere worth shouting about in the area? Head to COMMUNITY and spread the good word.

How much of my time will the program take each week?

Apprenticeship training should be delivered during the apprentices’ working hours. All apprentices must be allocated 20% of their paid working hours for “off-the-job training”.That can be spread in any way across your working week and does not need to be taken as a solid chunk. It will likely vary week to week according to the specific course you are on and what is being delivered and its method of delivery each week.

Please see the “Delivery method” section of each cohort to get a better idea of how much

What if I decide to leave halfway through the program?

Our recruitment process will be focused on ensuring that we get people who are truly committed to their course.

In the first instance, we will do everything we can to support the apprentice to remain on the program.

In exceptional circumstances, such as long-term illness or in some cases personal challenges, we can apply a ‘break in learning’ to allow the apprentice some time away from their learning.

What are the benefits to Pirate of this?

What are the benefits to the Apprentice?

  • Achieve a nationally recognised qualification
  • Develop, reinforce and enhance their skills, knowledge and behaviours to maximise their potential
  • Build their confidence
  • Earn as they learn. Pirate fund their apprenticeship training.

Why are there only 10 spaces available?

Each apprenticeship costs either £5,000 or £9,000 and Pirate has managed to secure £70,000 of external funding to provision this training programme this year. We also have to ensure we have the internal resources to be able to support these apprenticeships.

If I don’t get through this time, will there be another opportunity in the future?

Potentially. This is the first time Pirate is offering something like this and if all goes well we will want to continue to offer apprenticeships.
